June 19, 2013 in World of Warcraft by NewsBot v2.0

Through good times and bad, victories and cataclysms, Fortitude buffs and stun locks, we are a vibrant and time-tested community—we are the World of Warcraft. Late-night host Jimmy Fallon gets it . . . and even wrote a song about it! "We Are the World of Warcraft" made its worldwide debut Tuesday night on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon during the show’s annual post-E3 "Video Game Week." This musical nod to the WoW community includes cameos by Felicia Day, Chris Hardwick, and many other of your WoW-playing peers. Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone who was willing to not only participate in this bit, but wear their inner geek on their sleeves. And special thanks to Jimmy Fallon, the Roots, John Wyatt Haskell, Gavin Purcell, Justin Ulbrich, and the rest of the staff at Late Night for approaching us with this crazy-fun idea and making it a reality!

What Diablo III Character Would You Hang Out with for a Day?

June 19, 2013 in Diablo 3 by NewsBot v2.0

The world of Diablo III is populated with a wide range of characters and personalities. Some call Sanctuary home — heroes, artisans, followers, merchants, strange beasts, and more – while others claim the High Heavens or Burning Hells as their domain. Although each has their own unique story to tell, few would likely make for desirable company outside their digital realm.

Fan Art by Ya Lee (Lee337)

But everyone, be it a Fallen Shaman, Archangel, or cunning scoundrel, sometimes needs some time off from battling for Sanctuary's future. So, for our latest community question, we want to ask:

You get to hang out with one Diablo III character for a day. Who do you choose?

A Guide to Dragon Bash, Part Two

June 18, 2013 in Guild Wars 2 by NewsBot v2.0

(Warning – Spoilers!)

Mini Guide

Available Tuesday, June 18th

  • Dragon effigies have been placed in all of the explorable maps for levels one to 35. Perform a ritual dance in front of an effigy to gain a 2% health boost. These health boosts can stack up to 10% as you channel the ritual dance skill.
  • You’ll be directed to the effigy lighting ceremony, a single-player instance called Memories on the Pyre, where the Captain’s Council of Lion’s Arch and cultural representatives from the different races of Tyria will light the effigies in the Grand Piazza on fire.
  • The effigy ceremony goes awry when one of the effigies emits an arcane pulse that kills the charr cultural representative and wounds three of the council members. Help Inspector Kiel to escort a dolyak carrying the wounded to Fort Marriner. Along the way, you’ll need to fend off Aetherblade pirates and Inquest golems that descend from the sky. Safely reach the Lionguard headquarters and talk to Kiel to finish this story instance.

Available Wednesday, June 19th

  • A mysterious message will send you to seek out private investigator Marjory Delaqua in the Dead End, a bar in the Eastern Commons of Divinity’s Reach. After her cinematic introduction, head back to Lion’s Arch to investigate. All of the story instances will be single-player.
  • Talk to Investigator Kiel in the Grand Piazza to enter the Scene of the Crime, a single-player instance. After a scene between Marjory and Kiel, talk to Marjory to obtain an Investigation Kit. With the help of the kit, you’ll be able to exonerate five of the murder suspects.
  • A message from Marjory indicates that three of the suspects have been located. The ogre Vorrk in Lion’s Arch, the quaggan Morraloo in Bloodtide Coast and the skritt Kasparak in Gendarran Fields.
  • Upon finding Vorrk’s body, use the Investigation Kit to collect arcane residue evidence. Morraloo and Kasparak are found alive; you should be able to talk them into returning to Lion’s Arch for investigation.

Available Thursday, June 20th

  • Next, another mail from Marjory indicates that the last two suspect have been found: Trembling Song in Snowden Drifts and Astorra in Caledon Forest. Again, these suspects won’t need to be taken by force.
  • Return to the Grand Piazza and talk to Kiel to enter the Scene of the Crime again. Marjory will retune her Investigation Kit for the combined arcane residue of all of the collected samples. Upon retesting the suspects, all suspects will be exonerated except for one. When that suspect is scanned, their hands will glow with arcane residue. Revealed, the suspect will confess and call down their crew to cover their escape.
  • After defeating the attack, talking with Kiel will complete the story and give you Marjory’s Journal. Marjory will tell you she’s heading back to Divinity’s Reach.
  • If you return to the Dead End bar, Marjory and Kasmeer will each have a small, optional follow-up conversation with you.

New Rewards

  • Marjory’s Journal, which Kiel will give you after you’ve exonerated all but one of the suspects, will allow you to watch Marjory’s introductory cinematic with Logan Thackeray and Kasmeer Meade.

New Achievements

  • Four new achievements will be available. These will need to be completed in order: Ceremony and Acrimony, Hard Boiled, Every Piece Matters and No More Secrets. A fifth achievement, Case Closed, helps track the story, but does not count towards the The Dragon Bash Experience meta-achievement.

Marjory’s Story: The Last Straw, part 1

June 18, 2013 in Guild Wars 2 by NewsBot v2.0

The boy couldn’t have been older than eighteen. A pool of blood reflected the lights of Divinity’s Reach, and his death rattle still echoed back and forth between my ears.

I stated the obvious, “You killed him.”

“I did my job.” Ministry Guard Henrick Baker had moved in so close I could smell the smugness on his breath. His uniform matched my own, the scarlet and silver I’d worn since joining the Ministry Guard. He’d taken the same oath I had—to protect and serve the Krytan Ministry and Divinity’s Reach. And yet, he’d murdered this citizen without trial or hesitation.

With one quick movement, unexpected by either of us, I slammed him against the stone wall, my forearm pressed hard up under his chin, my feet braced against retaliation. I ignited a gleam of necromantic fury at my fingertips—near his eye, where he couldn’t miss it.

He shied away, turning his face from the threat.

My voice didn’t sound like my own. “We were just supposed to take him in for questioning.”

“Those might’ve been your orders, but they weren’t mine.” Baker had the nerve to sound pleased with himself, as if he’d one-upped me. “It was a need-to-know mission.”

The Ministry had heard rumors that the boy had witnessed a gruesome crime. My immediate superior had dispatched Baker and me to bring him in. Bring. Him. In. Not kill him.

“You won’t get away with this,” I said, lacking anything wittier.

“What can you do? Turn me over to the Seraph? This was sanctioned by brass up in the nosebleed offices, way above our ranks. I’d be out of the holding cell before the Seraph had even finished grilling you. Then, you’d be the one in trouble, not me.”

My gut told me he was right. The stink on the Ministry Guard had been turning my stomach for far too long. I gave one last shove at his chin, banging his head against the stone, then released him. I did not, however, turn my back on him.

“Good call,” he said. “Listen, don’t be naive. What’s one dead stranger out of thousands in this city? The Ministry keeps us safe, and that’s all that matters. You keep your head down and do what you’re told. Maybe you’ll earn that need-to-know status. I’m heading back to the offices before some nosy citizen comes along.”

I was shaking so badly I couldn’t even answer him. I just watched him walk away, listened to the steady tap of his wooden heels on the cobblestones, and chewed on this last straw, this final, irrefutable stick of evidence that I was in with the wrong people.

“Hello?” someone said in a voice as quiet as the grave.

I turned on my heel and found myself face to face with a ghost, the boy’s ghost. My necromancy surged in me, responding to the presence of the recent dead. I let the power swell and flow through me.

Lore Updates: Characters Page, Warcraft Timeline

June 14, 2013 in World of Warcraft by NewsBot v2.0

We just uploaded two updates containing delicious slices of fresh lore to the World of Warcraft game site for your reading pleasure. The Warcraft timeline now includes synopses for Patch 5.2: The Thunder King and Patch 5.3: Escalation, and we also deployed a brand-new lore web feature: character cards!

Azeroth and the worlds beyond are full of peerless (player) heroes, but they are also home to a great number of important non-player characters who have each left an indelible mark on history.

Get to know these movers and shakers on the new characters page. To start things off we’re focusing on some of the world’s most famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask) characters, but you can expect an even wider range of people (and things) to make an appearance in time.

Check out the characters page now to learn more about the backstories and in-game locations of the characters of Warcraft.

Bash the Dragon, Smash the Dragon

June 14, 2013 in Guild Wars 2 by NewsBot v2.0

You have probably seen the videos of press smashing up our Dragon Bash dragon piñatas. We’re glad the press did such an excellent job of bashing their piñatas, but sometimes, to paraphrase Cindi Lauper, developers just want to have fun too. We brought a piñata into the studio and let the team have fun with it. Hopefully you’ll have as much fun watching this video as we did making it. Enjoy!
